Samsung Could Be Ready With Foldable Smartphones By Next Year

Samsung could be ready with foldable smartphones by next year

Samsung has made tremendous inroads in the mobile display segment with curved displays being added to its repertoire a couple of years ago. A new report is telling us that the company could be taking this up a notch with foldable displays.

It is said that the company will be ready with foldable display smartphones by next year. A Korean source cited a Samsung Display executive who apparently claimed that commercial versions of the display will be available by 2016.

We've seen concepts of the company's YOUM display a couple of years ago, so it's been in development for quite some time now. We're curious to see how the technology will be integrated with smartphones. It is almost obvious that Samsung will use this with an Android device, which is what the company did with its first curved display phone, the Galaxy Round.

However, it might be a better idea to use this technology on bigger devices like tablets, which will provide more room for users to play around with. Foldable handsets will allow users to carry large displays in a smaller form factor as both sides can be utilized accordingly.

Fellow Korean manufacturer LG is also making decent progress in the curved display segment, so we might see something from the company over the coming months.
